Halo Reach: arguably one of the smoothest, most frustrating, easiest, and fastest-paced sniping video games to ever grace a gaming console. Don't hurt me-I said "arguably". Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 certainly embraces the more realistic approach, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 rivals Halo in its wonderful sniper-friendly maps, but Halo Reach sniping trumps them all. You might be sitting there impatiently, waiting for me to prove my opinion, but you already know I'm right. You've just got your own particular reasons.
Sniping is an essential aspect of Halo Reach multiplayer game play strategy. Known as a "Power Weapon", the sniper rifle has the potential to dominate the opponent if placed in the right hands. The question, however, is: what determines the "right hands?"
Most of us would like to think; "Those "right hands" would be, well... mine, thank you very much." And so most of us would be wrong. Sure, if you pick it up and rattle off all 12 rounds at a couple guys, you'll eventually kill one or two. Thanks for the support, buddy.
And that's just it. Halo Reach sniping isn't about getting the gun in your hands and firing at whatever you see moving (unless that moving thing is your slower, "grieving" teammate, who likely deserves to be shot anyway). Sniping is fast, precise, and far too important for you to assume that you should be the one picking off the headshots.
The greatest problem with Halo Reach sniping, and FPS sniping in general, is the player behind the reticle. It's not the weapon, it's not the map, and it sure as heck isn't your Internet connection. It's your own girlishly small hands wrapped around the trigger guard of a weapon way too large for you.
Now, instead of just bashing your Halo Reach sniping skills all day long, let's see what we can do to make your wannabe sniper self into the Designated Marksman you think you are, and the one your teammates would prefer.
